A van driver has been hailed as a hero after he saved a motorist from a burning car in south east London.

The driver pulled the 28-year-old victim out of his car after it became engulfed in flames in Victoria Way, Charlton this morning.

The two motorists had crashed into each other moments earlier after the car driver suffered a fit at the wheel, a London Fire Brigade spokesman said.

The van driver, who has not yet been named by the brigade, is now in line to be publicly honoured for his bravery.

Fire crew manager Peter Davies, who was at the scene, said: "The van driver undoubtedly saved the man’s life.

"When we arrived the car was completely engulfed and two firefighters from East Greenwich did an excellent job of getting the fire under control quickly while other firefighters gave oxygen to the now semi-conscious car driver.

"I will be recommending that the driver of the van receives a brigade commendation for his actions.”

Paramedics took the victim to Queen Elizabeth II hospital in Woolwich just after 11am.

A spokesman for the London Ambulance Service said it sent a single responder by car, an ambulance crew and a duty officer to the scene.
