The roll-out of super-fast 4G mobile connectivity on the Tube has expanded to part of the Northern line.

Transport for London said its new 4G network had been switched on overnight between Archway and Kentish Town, including Tufnell Park station, on the High Barnet branch of the Northern line.

This means passengers can stream live TV and video, make calls and send texts and emails on the platforms, trains and while in the tunnels between the stations.

It follows the switch-on of 4G on part of the Central line, between Queensway and Holland Park, early Wednesday morning.

Camden Town, Oxford Circus and Tottenham Court Road are likely to be the next stations to join the network. Final testing is underway and is expected to be completed early in the New Year.

The 4G services are initially available to EE and Vodafone customers. Three UK and Virgin Media O2 (VM02) customers will be connected in the New Year.

The £1bn-plus project is being done by BAI Communications at no cost to TfL. Mobile phone customers will not be charged extra to access the 4G network.

BAI began work last year and will roll out 4G to all 137 below-ground stations and their interlinking tunnels – plus those on the Elizabeth line – by the end of next year.

4G is already available on the eastern section of the Jubilee line between Westminster and Canning Town stations, where it was first trialled.
