Britain is set for a soaking, with the remains of a tropical storm currently lashing the Caribbean due to hit UK shores over the weekend.

The Met Office has warned of downpours across the country from today, although the capital is likely to cling onto the sunshine until Sunday.

It comes in the wake of tropical storm Henri, which has moved up the east coast of America and is now headed for Newfoundland before it makes its transatlantic trip.

Forecaster Craig Snell warned: “Make the most of today – then we’re into an unsettled regime with frequent spells of rain.

Will ex-Tropical Storm Henri affect the UK's weather?

“From this afternoon onwards we lose this settled spell and it’s a much more unsettled look to things. We’ve got some very heavy rain moving across northern Ireland and across the country.

“The rest of today will be generally nice, and then we’ve got this weather system that will start to move through during the early hours of tomorrow. It should clear just after lunchtime so tomorrow afternoon isn’t looking too bad in London, but it will probably be a little bit fresher.

“On Sunday there are a few showers around but for the main bulk of the day it’s not looking too bad.

“But towards the end of the day it goes downhill with frequent spells of rain, and the wind also increases. The most unsettled spell for the south east looks like from the end of play on Sunday. Monday up to Wednesday looks quite unsettled.”

But he added Henri would “lose all its identity” by the time it reached Britain, with the weather front more closely resembling a particularly grim autumn than a fully-blown tropical storm.
