North London MP David Lammy took to Twitter to reassure followers he was "very much alive" following the death of similarly-named Motörhead rock star Lemmy.

The Labour representative for Tottenham claimed he had received "concerned messages" after the 70-year-old singer's death was announced on Tuesday morning.

Ian “Lemmy” Kilmister had been diagnosed with cancer on Boxing Day.

Mr Lammy tweeted: “Thank you for the concerned messages etc but I am very much alive. Condolences to Lemmy family and friends and fans.”

But some appeared unconvinced by his tribute to the rocker, accusing him of attempting to “joke” about the situation.

Garth Dann replied: “Nobody has tweeted you about it. Why make a joke about a man dying? Shameful.”

Another Twitter user said: “Not sure why @DavidLammy thinks cracking a joke about a dead man is ok. No one has tweeted him...“

Mr Lammy could not be reached for comment.

The politician is no stranger to mistaken identity. Earlier this year his local newspaper mixed up Mr Lammy's picture with a photograph of Julius Maada Bio, a controversial Sierra Leone politician who led a military coup in 1996.

The photograph was eventually replaced with a correct one.
