Tottenham fire: Woman forced to jump from upstairs window as blaze destroys tyre shop

A woman was forced to leap to safety from an upstairs window as a huge fire destroyed a tyre shop in north London.

The woman, said by police to have suffered a leg injury, was treated by paramedics and taken to hospital.

The blaze broke out at the Tyres 4 Us shop in Walpole Road, Tottenham, just after 7pm and took two hours to extinguish.

A fire brigade spokeswoman said 10 people escaped from flats above the shop before firefighters arrived.

Justin Hinchcliffe, who lives in Walpole Road, told the Standard: “I live about 150 yards away and I kept hearing these noises, as if someone was hitting my front door.

“I ignored them at first because living in an urban area you hear all sorts of strange loud noises.

“Then I looked out of the window and I saw this huge fire. It was like looking at the sun.

“I think the noises were tyres exploding. They had obviously just caught and it was travelling up to the flats above the shop.”

Neighbours took to social media to share pictures and video as the fire took hold.

Twitter user @CapriHakeem said: “Fire in Tottenham. It’s really bad. People jumping out of buildings. Hope everyone is safe and sound.”
