Angry film fans have vented their frustration online after Secret Cinema cancelled its opening night of a special Back to the Future screening.

A message posted on the Secret Cinema Facebook page gave no reason as to why the screening was cancelled but said it was “due to unavoidable circumstances beyond our control".

The announcement was made 90 minutes before the event was due to start, causing frustration for fans who had already travelled to London for the screening.

Some ticket holders said they travelled as far as Israel for the opening night which promised to re-create key scenes from the iconic time travel movie.

Daniel Gibling , who said on Facebook: "Tom Carson here, travel consultant saying 'f*** you' I can't make those other dates."

Ticket holders posted images of themselves making rude gestures on the Secret Cinema Facebook page after the cancellation was announced 90 minutes before the screening was due to start.

Daniel Gibling posted an image of himself and a friend making rude gestures and wrote: “Tom Carson here, travel consultant saying 'f*** you' I can't make those other dates. “

Another fan, Jamie Waddington, 36, told the Standard: “The rescheduling is frustrating because I purchased a costume envisaging sunshine, I don’t know if the weather will be the same at a later date.

“I am very lucky, I live in Shepherds Bush, all I have done is started gelling my hair back.

“We are co-ordinating with a group of four busy people, it will be really hard to find another date - I have taken a day off work.”

Daniel Gibling also posted this: "Here is Laronda Ramos, egg gatherer, expressing her feelings also"

And Chloe Smith-Moring said: “Secret Cinema I cannot begin to tell you how devastated and disgusted I am. After weeks of planning and excitement for my husband’s birthday which is today, and you pull this crap? Thank you for ruining my husband’s birthday and making a pregnant woman cry.”

The outdoor screening, which cost £53 per ticket, was due to take place at 5.15pm in a secret location.

A preview event was also cancelled yesterday only an hour before it was due to begin.

A statement from the company said: “We are devastated to make this announcement and sincerely apologise for having to announce it at this late a stage.

“We are working tirelessly to make sure that this spectacular event will go ahead tomorrow evening. We will be in touch at 11am tomorrow morning with a further statement for all attending guests.”

Customers due to attend the opening night are being offered tickets for another screening and will be given their first choice to reschedule.

The event, the largest ever yet to be staged by Secret Cinema, has sold more than 66,000 tickets and runs until August 10.
