This week in London: Millions gathered for coronation of Queen Elizabeth in 1953

It was the week that saw the coronation of Queen Elizabeth II and thousands of revellers drinking on the Underground in protest at the 2008 drinking ban.

Around three million people gathered on the streets of London to attend the coronation of Queen Elizabeth II in 1953. The princess took the role of Head of State after the death of her father, the King George VI, a year previously. The event reached 20 million viewers and was broadcasted in 44 languages.

In 2008, thousands of revellers made a defiant stand by spending the night drinking at several Underground stations. They were protesting against the drinking ban on the Tube, which would come into effect the following day. Police were forced to close six Tube stops and arrested 17 people.
