The Estate We’re In: Community trailblazers from Standard campaign to feature at WOW Festival

Action panel: Canon Rosemarie Mallett, Andrea Brown, Lorraine Jones and Kamika Nathan

Four inspirational women who are leading the way in transforming one of London’s most notorious housing estates, Angell Town in Brixton, are to field questions on a special panel.

The four, who feature prominently in our award-winning initiative The Estate We’re In, will be at the Women of the World Festival at the Southbank Centre on Sunday.

The panel, chaired by campaigns editor David Cohen, features Canon Rosemarie Mallett, vicar of St John’s Angell Town, Lorraine Jones, founder of the Dwaynamics fitness project that helps young people develop life skills through boxing, Kamika Nathan, founder of My London, which tackles the isolation of children by arranging trips to the capital’s great free spaces, and Andrea Brown, originator of It’s Your Local Market.

They will discuss the campaign to tackle deprivation and violence and empower residents so that opportunity and enterprise flourish.

WOW, which runs until Sunday, celebrates women and girls as thought-leaders, trailblazers, activists and innovators, as well as scrutinising the obstacles that stop them reaching their potential.

Contributors scheduled for the weekend include singer-songwriter Annie Lennox and radio presenter and comedian Sandi Toksvig.

It comes as the Estate We’re In is shortlisted for the International News Media Association Global Media Awards for “best public relations or community service campaign”.

INMA is a global community consisting of more than 600 news media companies in 80 countries and the judging panel comprises media executives from 19 countries.

The winners will be announced at a dinner in the Raphael Gallery of the Victoria and Albert Museum on May 24.

ESI Media, publisher of the Standard and the Independent, is also nominated for “best use of data analytics” within its online sales strategy.

Tickets for WOW are £20 for a day pass and £45 for a three-day pass. See: www.southbankcentre.co.uk
