Havering Council has raised a Union Flag above Romford Market Place to celebrate the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee which measures in at a whopping 242 square metres.

The flag, which is the size of a swimming pool, has been put up in Romford to celebrate a the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee and the Olympic and Paralympic Games.

It measures 22 metres by 11 metres and has been put up above Tollgate House, facing Romford Market Place.

The market place will host Diamond Jubilee celebrations throughout the extended weekend.

A special Jubilee market will be held Saturday 2 June. The market will be adorned with patriotic decoration and host music, dancing and a royal look-a-like competition will be held.

The borough’s official Diamond Jubilee celebrations will take place on Sunday 3 June in the market place with an event called Romfest.

The route of the torch will pass through the market place on its way to the Olympic Park in Stratford.

Councillor Michael White, Leader of Havering Council, said:

“I can’t think of a more fitting decoration for Havering to celebrate the Diamond Jubilee.

“We have a wide range of events planned for the Market Place and Romfest should be a great show.

“The flag is the perfect backdrop to what will hopefully be a memorable summer.”
