Tesco has been ridiculed for a sign at one of its east London stores which apologised for "incontinence" caused by a fridge breakdown.

The misspelled notice appeared on a refrigerator cabinet at the Tesco Express in Kingsland Road, Hackney over the weekend.

It read: "Due to Chillers Break Down stock in these Chillers are not suitable for use any more and is removed. We are trying to get this problem fix as soon as possible and are really sorry for any incontinence caused. Management".

A picture of it sparked an online frenzy after it was posted on Twitter by customer David Sparks, who lives nearby.

One user wrote; "I actually despair for humanity" while another said; "That makes me sad for the person who wrote it".

Mr Sparks told the Standard the sign had been taken down after he alerted Tesco bosses.

He said: "I included Tesco [in the tweet] and they said they had been in contact with the store manager who said they had taken it down.

"[Their spokesman] was quick and fairly polite.

He continued: "I had responses [on Twitter] which criticised the British education system but I just thought it was a hilarious sign".

Mr Sparks, 38, who works in recruitment, said: "It seems to be particularly busy and understaffed and a bit shabbier than you would expect. But it has not stopped me shopping there."

A spokesperson for Tesco said: “This is clearly not our finest* moment. We sincerely apologise for the inconvenience caused by the broken chillers, and for the grammatical errors."
