Spurs and England defender Michael Dawson today called on Londoners to grasp a “once-in-a-lifetime” opportunity to transform lives by signing up for Sport Relief.

The footballer, 30, said taking part in the fund-raising events will help make a difference to those “on your own doorstep”.

He added: “Sport Relief is an excellent cause that raises money to help people living really tough lives here in London.

“It’s also a great opportunity to get active and fund-raise to change lives in the UK and across the world’s poorest countries.

“For Londoners, this is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to take part in something that is really helping to make a difference on your own doorstep. What could possibly be more inspiring than that?” The Sainsbury’s Sport Relief Games take place from March 21 to 23.

The public can join the fun and games by running, swimming or cycling their way to raising cash at more than 1,000 venues all around the country, including landmark events at Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park, the London 2012 Games venue in east London.

The Standard’s Dispossessed Fund has for the second time joined forces with Sport Relief and will be a beneficiary of the funds raised.

Almost 9,000 people in the capital have now signed up to take part in one of several events to raise cash for the charity.

Premier League star Dawson, who has four England caps, said: “I got involved because I wanted to join people all around the country who are running, swimming and cycling to help disadvantaged people change their lives.

“I’m definitely encouraging all of London to get 2014 off to a great start by signing up.

“So join in the fun and games, raise cash and change lives.”
