'Splashback' urine-repellent walls will soak offenders in Brixton

'Splashback': An engineer coats a wall with a urine-repellent substance in Brixton

A special wall coating designed to soak anyone who tries to urinate against buildings is being trialled in Brixton.

The liquid-repelling substance will be used at a series of secret locations across the south London town centre to deter street urination.

If successful, the “splashback” wall coating will be rolled out at various other spots in the area.

The wall coating carries a revolutionary super-hydrophobic treatment, meaning that urine will bounce off the wall and back towards the offender.

It is also intended to stop urine soaking into the wall, reducing stains and smells, which costs the local authority thousands to clean-up each year.

Councillor Jennifer Brathwaite, Lambeth cabinet member for environment and transport, said: “People urinating in the street is disgusting and a real irritation for local residents and businesses.

“Brixton is a particular hotspot, with many people leaving bars and other venues without having been to the toilet. This splashback spray will give people some comeuppance and make them think twice before peeing in the street in future.”

The trial has been organised by the Brixton Business Improvement District, a collective of 650 local businesses, in conjunction with Lambeth Council and protectant providers Liquiproof.
