Spectacular photos as London enjoys 'one of the most beautiful sunsets ever'

Londoners have shared their stunning photographs of "one of the most beautiful sunsets ever" over the capital.

Breathtaking images taken by people as they enjoyed the spectacle show the city’s skyline illuminated with colour on Wednesday evening.

Delighted Londoners took to social media on their journeys home to share their striking pictures as orange and pink hues lit the sky.

Sharing her stunning image of the sun setting behind the Shard and the Gherkin, one Twitter user wrote: “The sunset over London tonight was nothing less than spectacular.

“Feeling privileged to live in such a beautiful city.”

Another wrote: "Today's sunset was definitely one of the most beautiful ones I have ever seen."

Others told how they were enjoying the view while on their evening run through the capital, with another saying: “London’s Sunset was intense tonight!”

Another social media user said: “Tonight's sunset was like a once in a year deal."

And another wrote: “fiery skies” along with a picture of the sun setting over the capital.

Londoners used the hashtags #London and #Sunset and #Londonsky while posting their incredible photographs on Twitter.

One user, who appeared to be departing the capital, took a stunning photo from their view from Canary Wharf.

He wrote: "Amazing #sunset last night from the office. I'll miss you."

The sun was captured setting behind famous landmarks such as the Shard, St Paul's, Canary Wharf, as commuters looked up in awe.

The spectacle came as the Met Office announced that temperatures are set to soar to their highest since mid July, with highs of 27c to hit parts of south-east England.

In contrast to the cool, damp weather seen in recent weeks, the capital stayed fairly dry thanks to the lingering effects of Hurricane Gert.

Southern England enjoyed the best weather as cloud and rain made way for a hot humid spell.

Met forecaster Marco Petanga said: "It's a combination of warm air coming off the Atlantic, but also a bit of a southerly breeze as well, which is a fairly warm direction for the UK, particularly at this time of year."
