A south London suburb is set to get its first ever cashpoint - if planning permission is approved.

Shoppers must currently pay go into a supermarket or off-licence and pay a minimum of £1.50 to use a cash machine in Nunhead, Southwark.

The new public ATM is proposed for the outside wall of a business in Nunhead Green, a conservation area of the zone 2 neighbourhood.

The nearest free cashpoints are about half a mile away at supermarkets in Rye Lane, Peckham.

A Facebook campaign to get one built in the area was set up more than a year ago and has since attracted 30 members.

"It is a scandal that the cheapest cashpoint for Nunheaders is £1.50," wrote Elizabeth Addison in January 2014.

"What do we want? Free access to our money. When do we want it? Now!

"I will be drafting a letter to all the Nunhead councillors and Harriet Harman MP."

Ms Addison reported later that "Ayres the Baker was on the brink of allowing one but then decided not to because of security worries".

But there was jubilation when Cllr Fiona Colley announced earlier this month in a post on the group: "Following up on our election promise to make the free cashpoint happen, Southwark Council has submitted plans to install a fee-free external cashpoint at 26 Nunhead Green, the former Nunhead Corner pop-up shop."

The consultation over the machine ends on June 7.
