Sledgehammer time at Mayfair Marriott Hotel as it revamps for summer launch

Makeover: Marriott Hotel Park Lane has been transforming its 152 rooms

It's not every day a luxury hotel encourages you to give one of its rooms the full rock ‘n’ roll treatment.

But the London Marriott Hotel Park Lane armed the Standard with a sledgehammer to do our worst to the final room to be demolished in its renovation.

The Grade II listed hotel in Mayfair, overlooking Hyde Park, has been transforming its 152 rooms and will relaunch in June.

Ten of the rooms have been knocked through to create suites, and the hotel has been kitted out with Apple products and LCD TVs.

General manager Nicolas Kipper said: “It will be like a British town house. When you enter the hotel that’s what we want to achieve. We want to be the best in Park Lane and in Mayfair.”

The building dates back to 1909 and was entirely residential until the Marriott group took over in 2002. It still retains its century-old facade.

The refurbishment will see a colour scheme of white, dove grey and lavender, with leathers, silk, solid wood and mirrored marble used throughout.

The revamp is part of a broader transformation of the north Mayfair neighbourhood as it prepares for the development of Crossrail, which will arrive in Bond Street in 2018.
