The Park Lane central reservation, which was briefly occupied by Romanian travellers, is now home to three large-scale sculptures.

The works are by Camden-based artist William Turnbull, who is considered a pioneer of modernism.

Turnbull, who recently turned 90, was influenced by viewing the earth from the sky as a Second World War airman.

His son, Alex, said that although the artist’s work could be seen in museums “this is perhaps one of the first large public displays”.

He added: “He was a pilot in the RAF and though he’s never shouted about his service, it’s very nice to be doing this in conjunction with the Jubilee.”

The works have been installed as part of Westminster council’s City of Sculpture festival.
