A schoolgirl has been left seriously injured after a fall at her school building in south east London.

The Bishop Justus Church of England School pupil was reported to have fallen at about 1.30pm today, police said.

Paramedics were called to the scene in Magpie Hall Lane, Bromley and treated the girl for injuries at the scene before taking her to an east London hospital for treatment.

A Met police spokesman said her injuries were "not thought to be life-threatening".

Officers were originally called to reports that she fell from the school building onto the playground below, but it later emerged that the accident occurred on an internal staircase.

A school spokeswoman said: "One of our students was injured as a result of a fall on a staircase.

"Our immediate concern was for the well-being of this student and therefore the police and an ambulance were called and the student received medical care on site and was then taken to hospital.

"No other students were involved in this accident."
