Safety fears over Regent Street Christmas lights during Storm Barney high winds

Christmas decorations in Regent Street had to be cut down by firefighters on Tuesday night after high winds sparked safety concerns.

A member of the public called the emergency services at around 10 o'clock after noticing the decorations blowing precariously in the wind.

The decorations shook as Storm Barney brought gusts of up to 80 miles per hour, felling trees, tearing down scaffolding, and toppling overhead railway lines.

Metropolitan Police officers attended and closed the road in both directions, while firefighters cut down some of the lines that held the hanging decorations.

The emergency services then handed over to the contractor who installed the decorations.

Gavin Shortall, 29, who works in Hawksmoor restaurant, filmed the decorations bouncing in the wind.

Mr Shortall, who lives in Tulse Hill, said: "Yesterday evening at around 10pm, a section of Regents Street just by Cafe Royal was cordoned off by police due to some unruly Christmas decorations.

"A large circular section of the decorations got caught in the wind and was dancing around violently, so much so in fact that it appeared as though it was about to tear away from its fixings.

"A fire crew on the scene eventually accessed the installation using a high-rise ladder and cut the supporting cables to the circular section which safely came crashing down to the ground."

A Crown Estate spokesperson said: "We place the highest priority on health and safety and our light installation team were on-site from the outset of last night's stormy weather.

"On identifying damage to wires near an installation due to the very high winds, the team responded swiftly and it was taken down, along with three similar installations, as a precaution.

"The team will continue to be on-site and monitor the situation."
