Sadiq Khan pledges to keep Londoners safe in New Year's message

Sadiq Khan had pledged to “keep Londoners safe” in his New Year’s message.

The Mayor of London also hailed the successful introduction of the Night Tube and told of plans to tackle air pollution in the capital during a video message posted on Facebook.

Mr Khan, who replaced Boris Johnson as mayor in May, also said 2016 had given him “so many memories to cherish forever”.

He added: “I’m proud to have been elected your mayor.”

In the minute long reflection on last year he said keeping the capital’s residents safe was his “main priority” and spoke of to the introduction of extra local policing teams across the capital.

He added: “So far with your help and support we’ve launched the most ambition plan to tackle air pollution anywhere in the world.

“The Night Tube is up and running on the Central, Victoria, Piccadilly, Northern and Jubilee Lines, making it easier to get about our city at night.

“Our new Hopper bus fare is making transport more affordable for millions of commuters.

"I’ve frozen TfL fares for four years and I’m pushing the Government to freeze fares on their lines too and our new homes for Londoners team is getting to work on ensuring we can build the thousands of genuinely affordable homes London needs.”
