Sadiq Khan has hinted that a planned state visit by Donald Trump should be cancelled after the US president continued to blast his response to the London Bridge terror attack.
A row erupted between as Mr Trump mocked the Mayor of London for saying there was “no reason to be alarmed” by the additional police presence on the capital’s streets following the attack.
Brushing aside criticism of his original claims, the US leader wrote on Twitter: "Pathetic excuse by London Mayor Sadiq Khan who had to think fast on his 'no reason to be alarmed' statement.
"MSM (mainstream media) is working hard to sell it!"
Appearing on Channel 4 News, Mr Khan said Mr Trump was wrong about “many things” and that his state visit should not go ahead.
"I don't think we should roll out the red carpet to the president of the USA in the circumstances where his policies go against everything we stand for,” he said.
"When you have a special relationship it is no different from when you have got a close mate. You stand with them in times of adversity but you call them out when they are wrong.
"There are many things about which Donald Trump is wrong."
Theresa May earlier defended the mayor, while stopping short of directly criticising Mr Trump.
"I think Sadiq Khan is doing a good job and it's wrong to say anything else - he's doing a good job," she told reporters at an election campaign event.
"We're working with him, working together and that's important - central government and the London mayoralty and his officials working together to ensure we are responding to the attack."
A spokesman for Mr Khan, responding to Mr Trump's latest tweet, said: "Nothing has changed since yesterday.
"The mayor is focused on dealing with Saturday's horrific and cowardly attack and working with the police, the emergency services and the Government to keep London safe."
The row came after seven people were killed when terrorists mowed pedestrians down at London Bridge before going on a knife rampage in Borough Market.
