A market trader has been fined after environmental health officers uncovered a catalogue of filth at his storage unit in Whitechapel, which included this rotting fish head.

Elsayed Hosny, 64, was punished after he pleaded guilty to failing protect food from contamination at the unit in Brady Street.

In July, his business was closed for several weeks after environmental health from Tower Hamlets council officers discovered a mouse infestation at the premises.

Officers found packages of dried fish which had been gnawed by mice at the storage unit and on display for sale at the market stall.

Among the filthy conditions recorded by inspectors was a rotting fish head found embedded in congealed blood at the base of a freezer.

Cllr Ayas Miah, cabinet member for environment, said: “The council take breaches of food safety very seriously, especially when they are extreme cases such as this.

"We remind all food retailers of the importance of hygiene, and will take enforcement action when retailers are in breach of the law.

"Our Food Safety team inspects businesses on a regular basis to ensure that everyone who lives, visits or works in the borough can be confident of consuming any food products they purchase.”
