'Right wing' City election coup fails

An organised “Right-wing coup” in the City of London Corporation elections failed to materialise after a ringleader lost his seat and a number of candidates were defeated.

Mark Clarke, a former Tory parliamentary candidate, was ousted while the three candidates he was backing were defeated. Mr Clarke had been part of a plan orchestrated by City alderman Matthew Richardson, executive director of Right-wing organisation the Young Britons’ Foundation, to get a slate of candidates elected.
