A cyclist who smashed into a tree during the RideLondon event has died.

Richard Kell, 71, was in a coma for three weeks after the crash on the 100-mile route but was unable to recover from his injuries.

The retired grandfather from North Abingdon, near Oxford, was airlifted to St George’s Hospital in Tooting after he came off his bicycle when he hit a tree near Pyrford in Woking.

He was in a coma for three weeks before his life support machine was turned off on August 23.

Mr Kell is the second man to die after taking part in the annual ride between London and Surrey after cancer survivor Robin Chard collapsed when he suffered a cardiac arrest during the event on July 31.

Mr Kell’s wife Hilary told the Oxford Mail: “He was such a happy person. He loved his cycling and loved his family.

"I just can't imagine life without him – he was so full of life. It was a tragic accident."

The 71-year-old signed up to the event to raise money for the British Red Cross, setting a donation target of £400 which has been surpassed.

A RideLondon spokeswoman said: "Very sadly we confirm that Richard Kell, aged 71 from Abingdon, has died as a result of injuries sustained during the RideLondon-Surrey 100 on Sunday, July 31.

"Richard was assisted by fellow riders and paramedics on the scene and was then airlifted from outside Pyrford to St George’s Hospital where he was treated in intensive care. He died on 23 August.

"Everyone involved in the organisation of RideLondon sends sincere condolences to Richard’s family and friends."

Mr Kell is survived by his wife Hilary, his daughter and two grandsons.
