Record sales in ‘Mobile Monday’ buying spree

2 December 2013

London retailers reported record levels of present buying on smartphones today as “Cyber Monday” turned into “Mobile Monday”.

Online sales were estimated to be up 16 per cent on the equivalent day last year, but for orders made on smartphones the increase is close to 25 per cent.

Adrian Quine, director of the British Online Retailing Association, said: “For many retailers this is the first Christmas that they’ve had a smart-phone friendly website.”

He estimated that between a fifth and a quarter of all online purchases today will be made on a mobile device, up from almost zero only two years ago.

A separate survey from online security systems company Tripwire revealed that 63 per cent of UK consumers will use their mobile at least once for Christmas shopping this year.
