A rare portrait of Mozart is on display to the public before it is expected to be auctioned for around £300,000.

The miniature, probably intended to be worn as a locket, will be sold at Sotheby’s on Thursday.

It was given to the composer’s cousin Maria Anna Thekla Mozart and was painted in 1777 by an unknown artist.

The portrait shows a 21-year-old Mozart wearing a red coat with his hair tied with a bow.

"Mozart's features come as a revelation when viewed in the flesh; the detail in the face is remarkable, formed by the tiniest dots of gouache applied with the utmost precision and delicacy, and a marvellous luminosity pervades the entire image. The artist, though unknown, has caught the essence of the composer."
