Same sex couples converting their civil partnerships into marriages today are being invited to have their photograph taken on a special rainbow crossing.

The crossing, located close to Nelson’s Column in Trafalgar Square, has been rolled out to mark the moment gay couples can convert their civil partnerships into marriages.

Couples are being invited to have their pictures taken at the crossing to celebrate the lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender community in London.

The Marriage Act (Same Sex Couples) 2013 comes into force today allowing same sex couples to change their civil partnerships into marriages.

The crossing will be in place from 7.30am until 7pm this today.

Martyn Loukes, chair of Transport for London’s LGBT+ network, said: “Once again we’re showing our support for our LGBT customers, families and staff in London, and we would love couples to come down have their picture taken to celebrate this momentous event.

“I’ll be converting my civil partnership on the day, and will be marking the occasion by going to Trafalgar Square with my husband to have our picture taken on the crossing.”
