Four fire engines rushed to a popular south London pub this morning after a blaze broke out.

Five people fled flats above the Kennington in Camberwell after the fire erupted on the building’s third floor.

Around 25 firefighters tackled the flames, with the situation under control by 9.30am, London Fire Brigade said.

A nearby resident posted a photo on Twitter showing smoke billowing above the surrounding rooftops.

He tweeted: “Keep those doors and windows closed. Hope everyone is safe.”

Crews from Lambeth, Peckham and Brixton fire stations arrived at the scene at around 8.25am after receiving 11 emergency calls.

The cause of the fire is now under investigation.
