A 79-year-old woman was killed and two other pensioners were seriously injured in a crash on a motorway route linking London with Cambridge.

The collision took place at 3.30pm yesterday when a car hit a lorry on the M11.

Essex Police said the woman who died was from Halifax, West Yorkshire, and was a passenger in the silver Vauxhall Astra.

Both vehicles were travelling south when the crash happened. It caused the car to veer off the road until it hit some trees.

A 72-year-old man driving the car and an 81-year-old woman, who was a passenger, remain in hospital. Police described their injuries as “serious.”

Both are from Nottinghamshire.

The accident caused severe traffic on the motorway yesterday and the road was closed until 10.30pm.

Any witnesses can call the Essex Police Serious Collision Investigation Unit on 101 or email collisionappeal@essex.pnn.police.uk
