A pedestrian has been taken to hospital after she was hit by a motorist driving a suspected stolen car which was being pursued by police.

The woman was knocked down on Sumner Road at the junction with St George's Way, Peckham, shortly after 4pm this afternoon.

Police officers gave her first aid at the scene before paramedics from the London Ambulance Service took her to a south London hospital.

Her condition is not thought to be life-threatening, Scotland Yard said on Wednesday.

Minutes before the crash, officers on patrol in Southwark attempted to stop a car which they believed had been stolen.

When the driver of the car refused to stop, they pursued the vehicle until it hit the pedestrian. The driver failed to stop at the scene.

They later found the car abandoned and arrested a man in connection with the incident. He remained in custody at a south London police station on Wednesday.

Detectives from the Met's Roads and Transport Policing Command are investigating.

The incident has been referred to the Directorate of Professional Standards, a department within the Metropolitan Police which is responsible for investigating the conduct of its officers.

The road was closed between Old Kent Road and Willowbrook Road while police investigated and buses were on diversion.

Anyone with information is asked to call police on 101.
