A woman has died after being hit by a lorry in Peckham.

The 76-year-old pedestrian was struck by the truck in Peckham High Street, close to Rye Lane at around 2pm this afternoon.

Police, paramedics, and London Air Ambulance attended, but the woman was pronounced dead at the scene, near to the library.

Witnesses said shopping bags were left strewn across the road following the crash.

Those at the scene also said the driver was left visibly shaken by the accident.

People took to Twitter to pay their condolences, with many saying the stretch of road is notoriously dangerous.

The woman's next of kin are yet to be informed and a post-mortem examination will take place in due course.

Police said the driver of the lorry was spoken to at the scene, and no arrests have been made at this stage.

Road closures were in place, and Transport for London has warned people travelling through the area to use other routes and expect long delays on approach.

Anyone with information or witnesses to the collision is asked to called the Roads and Transport Policing Command at Catford on 0208 285 1574 or the police non-emergency line on 101.
