Old Street crash: huge pile-up on City Road after driver suffers cardiac arrest at the wheel

A driver crashed into several other vehicles at a major roundabout today after suffering a cardiac arrest at the wheel.

The victim was treated at the scene by staff from Moorfields Hospital, which overlooks the crash site on City Road, before being taken to an east London hospital by paramedics.

A Met Police spokesman said he was in a "serious condition", adding it was likely the man had fallen ill at the wheel moments before the crash.

A spokeswoman for the London Ambulance Service said he was taken to the Royal London Hospital "as a priority".

She said: "We sent an advanced paramedic practitioner, an ambulance crew, an incident response officer and a motorcycle paramedic to the scene.

"We treated a patient for a cardiac arrest. They were taken to the Royal London Hospital as a priority".

There were no other reported injuries.

The road was closed at the junction with Old Street and buses were put on diversion while police investigated.

Motorists were facing delays near the Old Street roundabout after the pile-up.

No arrests have been made following the crash at 10.25am today, Scotland Yard said.

Police re-opened the road just before 3pm.
