Old Street crash: Female cyclist hit by HGV in rush hour crash near notorious junction

A female cyclist was in hospital this evening after a collision with a lorry near a notorious junction in central London.

The woman was hit by an HGV at the junction of City Road and Cranwood Street just before 5pm, police said.

It is the second crash involving a lorry and a female cyclist today after a woman was hit near Blackfriars Bridge this morning.

Witnesses reported hearing a "gut-wrenching scream" in the collision near the notorious Old Street roundabout.

A Metropolitan Police spokesman said: "We were called to City Road at the junction of Cranwood street to reports of a lorry and a cyclist in collision.

"The cyclist has gone to hospital with injuries that are not thought to be life-threatening."

A witness to the crash posted on Twitter: "I hope the cyclist that got hit by a hgv in old street is ok the scream I heard was gut wrenching."

Clement Murphy said he was told of the collision by another cyclist at nearby traffic lights.

"Told at a traffic light by fellow cyclist a woman went under a HGV just behind me at Old Street Roundabout. Scary," he posted on Twitter.

Another witness to the aftermath of the crash posted: "Looks like another poor person has gone under a heavy duty vehicle at old street roundabout. When is it too many?"

In a separate crash a female cyclist thought to be in her 20s was taken to hospital after a collision with a lorry near Blackfriars Bridge this morning.

The woman is thought to be in a stable condition after the incident at the junction of Southwark Street and Blackfriars Road at about 10am.

This evening's collision came as hundreds of cyclists gathered at the nearby Bank junction for a "die-in" vigil to commemorate 26-year-old Oxbridge graduate Ying Tao, who was killed there last Monday.
