A car somersaulted onto its roof after smashing into a traffic island in north London on Tuesday.

The male driver miraculously walked away with just minor injuries after the dramatic crash in north Finchley.

A photo from the scene shows the wreck of the car on its roof and a damaged lamppost which appears to be bent to nearly a 45 degree angle.

Police and paramedics raced to High Road after the crash at a zebra crossing near to Friern Watch Avenue on Tuesday morning.

A spokesman for the Met Police said they were called at 11.35am to reports a car had collided with the central reservation and landed on its roof.

Passers-by were left stunned by the sight of the car, which blocked traffic moving through the busy north London high street.

One person, who goes by the name of @tombrehon on Twitter, said: “A car is north Finchley High Road is literally upside down smashed up in the middle of the road.”

The police spokesman told the Standard on Tuesday afternoon the car was recovered and road cleared. The driver suffered just minor injuries.
