New map plots happiest and most miserable areas based on acts of kindness or aggression on London's streets

Miserable: Researchers analysed 'micro-interactions' of kindness or rudeness to determine which areas were happiest (Picture: Rex Features)

Fulham and Parsons Green are the capital's happiest areas, according to a observational study that compared body language and everyday acts of aggression on London's streets.

Nearby Tooting in contrast is among the most miserable, based on the analysis of factors including facial expressions, laughter and bad driving.

Researchers compared the "social environments" of different London areas as part of a year-long study, which saw them calculate scores after observing so-called "micro-interactions" between strangers.

Frowning, talking about someone behind their back and barging past people in the street are some of the many factors taken into account.

Using the results the study claims to have generated "positivity outlooks" for each parent postcode, with the findings plotted on an interactive map launched today.

It illustrates the apparent happiness of areas in the form of a weather forecast, describing for example Putney as "Rather sunny" or Finsbury Park as "Grey. Just Grey."

Creative agency Clubhouse Studios are behind the project. Co-founder Dan Coppock said: “Over the past few years interest in the science of being happy has grown steadily.

"Whether its individual exercises to improve mindfulness or survey-based happiness studies of populations, we’re becoming increasingly aware that the choices we make, and the way we live can have a big impact on our social wellbeing."

He added that sharing spaces with friendly strangers even for just a few minutes a day could make people more optimistic.

SE21 – Dulwich Village, West Dulwich
