MPs pull Top Totty! 'Sexist' ale dropped from Commons bar

10 April 2012

Labour MP Kate Green today secured a Commons ban on a beer called "Top Totty" after she found the ale on sale in Parliament's Strangers Bar.

A picture of a bunny girl in a bikini, right, featured on the pump alongside the name.

Ms Green told MPs: "I was disturbed last night to learn that the guest beer in the Strangers Bar is called Top Totty and there is a picture of a nearly naked woman on the tap."

Speaking at the weekly Business Questions she said there should be a debate on "dignity at work in Parliament" and asked the Leader of the House to "join with me in asking that this beer be withdrawn immediately from sale in the bar".

Commons Leader Sir George Young replied: "I will raise the matter through the commission with the appropriate officer of the House."

There was a rush for the beer after Ms Green complained but a Commons spokesman later said: "We have withdrawn it from sale today. I do not think there is very much left."

Top Totty is brewed by Slater's in Stafford and was nominated to be a guest beer by the town's Tory MP Jeremy Lefroy. The woman who modelled for the bunny girl picture visited the bar yesterday with the brewery's boss.

Strangers Bar is used by MPs and their guests from outside Parliament.
