A motorcyclist has died after being hit by a car during the morning rush hour in south east London.

The biker, who police said was a man aged in his mid-20s, was knocked down on Copers Cope Road at the junction with Bridge Road in Beckenham.

Police were called to reports of a crash in the road just after 8.15am today along with paramedics from the London Ambulance Service and London's Air Ambulance.

The victim was pronounced dead at the scene, a spokesman for Scotland Yard said.

His next of kin have been informed, he added.

A spokesman for the London Ambulance Service said: "We were called at 8.07am to reports of a road traffic collision involving a car and motorcycle on Copers Cope Road in Beckenham.

"We sent a number of resources to the scene including London's Air Ambulance.

"Sadly, the patient was pronounced dead at the scene by the doctor from London's Air Ambulance."

Motorists were advised to avoid the area while the road was closed for a police investigation.

Detectives today appealed for witnesses to the crash to speak to them.

Anyone with information can contact police on 101.
