A mother, her child and a teenager were injured after being hit by a BMW driven by an elderly man at rush hour in north London.

Police said the car ploughed into the pedestrians as they crossed a busy road in Mornington Crescent before crashing into a lamppost.

The three pedestrians and the driver - who is in his 90s - were all taken to hospital for treatment after the crash in Harrington Square at around 5.45pm.

Police later said the four people had been discharged.

Pictures from the scene showed an estate car on the pavement after crashing into a lamppost near Mornington Crescent station.

Elina Talvitie tweeted: "Nasty-looking accident at Harrington Square, Mornington Crescent, by the Egyptian cat building."

Jo Eden added: "Woah - massive emergency services presence on Hampstead Road, looks like it could be a bad RTA."

A Met police spokesman said: "At this early stage it is believed a car was in collision with three pedestrians then a lamppost.

"The three pedestrians; a mother and child, and a teenager were taken to a central London hospital.

"The driver of the car, believed to be a man in his 90s, was taken to a separate east London hospital."

Hampstead Road and other roads in the area were closed after the crash.
