This was the moment passers-by rushed to the aid of a motorcyclist sprawled in the road after two bikes crashed in south London.

The footage taken on Sunday captured what happened before and after the crash at about 4pm in Newington Butts, near Elephant and Castle, which put the man in hospital.

In the video, recorded by another motorcyclist following behind, two bikers can be seen chatting at traffic lights before pulling away when the light turns green, leaving the filmmaker for dust.

When the filmmaker catches up to them again, one of the motorcyclists and both bikes are lying in the road.

It is difficult to make out the moment of impact - at about one minute 30 seconds into the clip - but it appears the bikes crashed as a car edged into their lane while apparently performing a U-turn.

Several people are seen racing over to help as the injured man writhes in pain - including a passing cyclist who takes charge of the situation.

The woman, who appears to have medical training, shouts "Will someone call an ambulance?" as she crouches down to help.

The video was posted today on the Facebook group for cycly safety campaign Stop Killing Cyclists.

One member, David John Dry, wrote: "As both a cyclist and a motorcyclist, that was frightening from a number of points of view: Excessive speed, racing in a group and not wearing the proper protective clothing. I don't wish anyone harm on the road and hope the injured motorcyclist gets back to normal without too much pain, however."

Emergency services had yet to arrive when the filmmaker eventually drove off.

Police said one rider was taken to a south London hospital, where he was yesterday in a stable condition with injuries that were not thought to be life-threatening.

The other rider was treated at the scene.
