Smoke billowed for miles as dozens of firefighters tackled a blaze at a block of flats in central London.

Four fire engines and 21 firefighters raced to the scene of the fire at a block of maisonettes in Marylebone on Tuesday afternoon.

London Fire Brigade (LFB) said a five roomed maisonette on the second and third floor was alight and that it had received 47 999 calls about the fire.

Three people managed to leave the property before the arrival of the Brigade and were treated at the scene for smoke inhalation.

The LFB say one of the three people was taken to hospital by the London Ambulance Service. Their condition is not known at this stage.

LFB were first alerted to the fire shortly before 4pm.

Dramatic pictures from the scene revealed the scale of the fire, as it could be seen from miles away.

Firefighters were called at 3.55pm

The LFB say they were called at 3.55pm to the fire and had it under control by 5.30pm.

Crews from Kensington, West Hampstead, Kentish Town and Hammersmith fire stations are at the scene.

The cause of the fire is under investigation, the LFB say.

Train services around Marylebone were disrupted due to the fire.

Chiltern Railways reported that some services were stationary and disruption was affecting travellers.
