Man rescued by passer-by after wading into the River Thames

A man was pulled to safety by a passer-by after he waded into the River Thames in the early hours of Saturday morning.

A lifeboat crew from Tower RNLI were scrambled to the scene near the Tate Modern by Blackfriars Bridge after a man in his 20s became partially submerged in water shortly before 2.55am.

He was pulled from the water by a passer-by before the crew arrived and assessed the man for injuries.

Keith Chima, lifeboat helmsman, said “The casualty was wet through and very cold but was responding to our voices.

“It transpired he had been spotted wading into the river by a passer-by who went into the water and pulled him out. We think it likely the casualty was under the influence of alcohol which may explain his actions.”

The RNLI is urging people near to swim in the Thames due to strong river currents which flow faster than Olympic athletes can swim.
