A romantic man found a memorable way to propose to his partner - by getting down on one knee at 10 Downing Street.

Simon Coates, 51, popped the question to his girlfriend of three years, Caroline Jayne Revell, during a charity event hosted by Samantha Cameron.

The couple, from Hurstpierpoint in West Sussex, were visiting the White Room at the famous residence for a charity reception organised by Dimbleby Cancer Care and the Quintessentially Foundation.

He said: "I was racking my brains for a few weeks to think of a special place where I could propose and then when we received the invitation from the Quintessentially Foundation to attend the charity event, I thought why not?

Caroline said: "I was completely shocked and thrilled and had to have a glass of water to relax afterwards. It was such a unique venue and I was very moved by Simon taking the time to plan something so wonderful. The charity now holds a special place in my heart and I plan to start supporting them in any way I can."

Dimbleby Cancer Care, based at Guy's and St Thomas' hospitals in London, was set up in 1966 in memory of renowned broadcaster Richard Dimbleby. It aims to provide practical and psychological support to people living with cancer and to their families and carers.

Robin Pritchard, director of Dimbleby Cancer Care, added: "It was a wonderful way to end an inspiring evening. I wish them both the best of luck in married life."

Ben Elliot, founder of Quintessentially Foundation, which aims to improve the health, education and welfare of disadvantaged people, said: "I can honestly say this is a first. We've never had two members get engaged at one of our events, let alone a venue of such revere. I am not sure how they will top this with a wedding venue!"
