A man has died in a fire in a woodland area close to Leyton Marshes.

Police and firefighers were called just after 2.30 on Thursday afternoon by a member of the public who reported seeing a body in a wooded area that was on fire near Lea Bridge Road.

Two fire engines and fourteen firefighters and officers were called to the incident from Leyton and Walthamstow fire stations, as well as police and paramedics.

Emergency services were on the scene for just over an hour.

The body is thought to be that of a man, and police are treating his death as unexplained.

A Metropolitan Police spokeswoman said: "At this early stage the death is being treated as unexplained pending a post mortem examination.

"The coroner has been informed and enquiries continue."

A London Fire Brigade spokesperson said the cause of the fire is under investigation.
