An investigation has been launched after the body of a man was found in a south London house fire.

Police and London Fire Brigade were called to reports of a fire in Sandpiper Road, south Croydon at 11.30pm on Friday.

Firefighters spent nearly an hour tackling the blaze before discovering the man’s body on the ground floor.

A London Fire Brigade spokesman said: “Part of the ground floor of a semi-detached house was damaged by fire. Firefighters found a man in the ground floor extension who was sadly pronounced dead at the scene.”

The Metropolitan Police said it was still trying to trace the victim’s family on Monday morning.

A Scotland Yard spokesman said: “The cause of the fire is under investigation, though early indications suggest it is not suspicious.”
