A London woman has died and two young girls are in hospital following a horror crash on a major motorway out of the capital.

The 37-year-old, from Hampton in south-west London, was pronounced dead at the scene after the car she was travelling in veered off the M4 and ploughed into a tree on Saturday.

Two girls aged three and five are being treated at John Radcliffe Hospital in Oxford. A man in his late 30s, who was also in the car, has been discharged.

Thames Valley Police said the smash happened between junctions 11 and 10 on the way into London shortly after 2pm on Saturday.

The crash caused major tailbacks for motorists on both carriageways, with some exiting their vehicles to race to help the injured passengers.

Detective Sergeant Ashley Hannibal, of Thames Valley Police, said: "We are appealing for any witnesses who have not yet been spoken to by police to get in touch please.

"This was a single vehicle collision in which, sadly, a woman in her 30s died.

“I would like to take the opportunity to thank the many members of the public who stopped and helped immediately after the collision prior to the emergency services' arrival."
