Artworks formerly owned by Lucian Freud have been accepted for the nation to settle £2.34 million death duties on his estate.

The National Gallery has been given the painting L’Italienne ou La Femme a la Manche Jaune by Corot.

Freud was a strong supporter of the gallery. Three Degas bronzes were also accepted to help settle inheritance tax.

Freud, who died in 2011, left nearly £96 million. Culture Secretary Maria Miller and Arts Council chief executive Alan Davey presented the Corot to gallery director Sir Nicholas Penny today.
