This is the dramatic moment a fire triggered an explosion at an east London car repair workshop.

Footage captured on a mobile phone shows sparks flying into the air after a loud bang is heard from behind a grocery store.

Around 35 firefighters tackled the blaze on Colchester Avenue in Manor Park, Newham, after it began shortly before 11pm on Friday.

Nearby residents were evacuated from their homes while a large cordon was put in place. They were not allowed back until the early hours.

Blast: Dozens of firefighters tackled the blaze

Firefighters had expressed concerns gas cylinders stored at the workshop may be at risk of exploding.

Station manager John Fahey, who was at the scene, said: “This was a difficult fire involving gas cylinders.

“Fire crews took quick, effective action to contain the fire to the car repair workshops and thankfully stopped it spreading to nearby homes. The workshop was totally damaged by fire.”
