Staff were tasked with measuring all 19,000 creatures big and small for the London Zoo’s annual weigh in today.

Huge silverback gorillas, rare baby crocodiles and snails were just some of the species weighed and measured to be collected in a database.

Ellish the giraffe, measuring 15 ft tall and tipping the scales at just under a ton, was the zoo’s heaviest animal.

In contrast, a tiny Partula snail was the smallest creature, weighing less than 4mg.

A giant ruler was used to measure western lowland gorilla Kumbuka, who came in at six foot tall.

The data is used to monitor wellbeing and helps in the detection of pregnancies in endangered species.

Measurements are recorded in the Zoological Information Management System, a database that is shared with zoos around the world.
