London snow alert: Snow arrives in capital amid severe weather warnings

Wintry flurries of sleet and snow have fallen in London amid severe weather warnings for the capital.

Snow began to fall in parts of south London including Kingston, Croydon and Bromley as the Thursday evening rush hour began.

It was followed by flurries in parts of north and west London including Hampstead, Muswell Hill, Islington and West Brompton.

Photos also showed people sheltering beneath umbrellas as they made their way through a snow flurry in the City of London.

Londoners took to social media to share photographs and videos as snowflakes began to fall across the capital from about 5pm.

It comes after driving snow, high winds and ice hit large parts of the UK, disrupting travel and closing schools.

The Met Office had issued a severe weather warning for the capital with snow predicted from 5pm.

Tube commuters experienced delays after Canary Wharf station was evacuated following a flood, while rail passengers were caught up in huge crowds at Waterloo.

At Heathrow Airport, 80 flights were cancelled as the forecast of snow and windy weather was expected to impact on services, while four flights were cancelled at Gatwick Airport.

One Twitter user, named Lilo, was one of the first to post a video of snow falling in south-west London. She tweeted the footage of snowflakes coming down over a busy main road in Tolworth.

Meanwhile, Sam Hill shared an image of snowflakes covering the platforms at Coulsdon station.

Rob Jones tweeted: "Just got home as it started snowing. 10 mins later it's settling. #Snow #London #PettsWood #Chislehurst."

Margot Cowhig said: "More snow in Canary Wharf than on my ski trip last week!"

British Transport Police shared a photo of a snow covered train station platform in the Bromley area.

Officers tweeted: "It's a bit snowy out but that doesn't stop us patrolling the Bromley area. It's slippery on the platforms so be careful."
