Londoners are set to bask in glorious sunshine as a heatwave hits the capital next week.

Temperatures may reach 31C on Tuesday as warm weather arrives from southern Europe.

Met Office forecaster Emma Sharples said: “Tuesday looks like the peak of the hot weather, temperatures could hit 30 degrees or even higher.

“There will be a bit of a change on the way as we get through Wednesday and things become more seasonal.”

It comes after warm weather saw Kew Gardens and St James’ Park in London record temperatures of 30 degrees, making them warmer than some parts of the Sahara.

The hottest temperature of the year so far was 33.5 recorded in Brize Norton, Oxfordshire last month.

Ms Sharples also warned that the heatwave would bring some heavy showers next week.

But she added that this weekend would be bright and rain free.

She said: "Tomorrow we're probably looking at temperatures of 25 and 26. There will be a bit more cloud around so it will be more bright rather than sunny but it should stay dry.

"By the time we get through to Sunday it will feel fairly warm but even so it will still be around 22 to 23 degrees."
