The first named summer storm of 2021 is set to bring “unseasonably strong winds and heavy rain” to London and southern parts of the UK.

Storm Evert is set to hit on Thursday bringing winds of up to 75mph and up to 40ml of rain in three hours overnight in Cornwall.

London is expected to be less badly hit than other parts of the UK after it suffered flash floods on Sunday.

However, there is still the possibility of thundery downpours and winds of up to 50mph on Friday.

Met Office spokesperson Stephen Dixon said: “It is specifically defined to the coast so it does not creep into London.

“But what comes with it is some residual impact with stronger than average wind and rainy conditions as Storm Evert moves through.

“Looking at London, there could be gusts of up to 50mph and widespread rain.

“There are still threats of thundery downpours as and when they hit. That said, it looks like the south west is going to take the brunt of the wind and the rainy conditions as well.”

The Met Office has issued an amber wind warning for the Isles of Scilly and Cornwall, from 9pm Thursday until 7am Friday.

Forecasters are warning of danger to life from flying debris and large, destructive waves.

Coastal areas could also see some damage to buildings, fallen trees, longer journey times, road closures, power cuts and beach material thrown onto roads.

Meanwhile a yellow wind warning is in place for much of the south west stretching from Devon to Hampshire and across the entire south coast of Wales.

On Friday, this extends around the south east coast from Brighton to Norfolk.

The capital is expected to see less than 5ml of rain in a 24 hour period on Friday, compared the south of Wales which should see 8ml in a single hour.
